Roddy Radiation (of The Specials), The Scotch v Motorco
Roddy Radiation
Roddy Radiation, former lead guitarist of the legendary British ska band The Specials, will be playing the 2018 Supernova International Ska Festival, along with select club dates in the northeast and the Carolinas, May 17 through May 26. Backing him will be the Baltimore/DC punky reggae crew The Scotch Bonnets.
"I'm very much looking forward to singing and playing my Specials hits," said Roddy from his home in England. “And treating my fans to a super show at Supernova Ska Festival!”
The Specials pioneered the ska revivial craze of the late 1970’s by combining the danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude. Roddy wrote many of The Specials’ classics such as "Concrete Jungle", "Hey Little Rich Girl", and "Rat Race", which helped to create the 2 Tone sound. Roddy has also played in rockabilly bands since his youth, such as The Tearjerkers and The Bonediggers. Currently, he leads The Skabilly Rebels, a band that forges a new sound by mixing ska rhythms with rockabilly guitars.
"The Specials' sound, their live energy, diversity and political philosophy are all things that have inspired my own music, as well as the way I think," admits Kristin Forbes, The Scotch Bonnets’ singer/guitarist. “But honestly, I'm excited to get to play with such a beast of a guitar player!”The Supernova International Ska Festival is the largest ska party in the US, taking place in Fredericksburg, VA on May 26 and 27. Roddy joins a lineup that features The Pietasters, The Stubborn All-Starts, The Suicide Machines, MU330, and Greg Lee from Hepcat, singing with Western Standard Time. The Scotch Bonnets, who will also be playing their own Supernova set, as well as an opening set at each of the club shows, will be promoting The District, their 7” record out on Jump Up Records. Roddy and the Bonnets will be at Motorco on Wednesday, May 23. A full list of tour dates can be found on Roddy's website, http://www.roddyradiation.com, or The Scotch Bonnets' site, http://thescotchbonnets.com.
The Scotch Bonnets
The Scotch Bonnets are the Baltimore/DC cats who always bring the good-love vibe with their funky reggae, rocksteady, and soul-flavored sound.
The Spectacles
With more than 15 years experience in the Triangle Ska Scene, the composer/arranger team of Jeremy Boomhower and Brannon Bollinger have assembled the best and brightest players to present a collection of their greatest hit arrangements for a new era in the annals of North Carolina Ska. The backbone of this upbeat octet is formed by perennial ska drummer Eric Mrozkowski, arranger extraordinaire Jeremy Boomhower on bass, and Ben Palmer kicking up the ska rhythm guitar. The blast from the brass is built from Tee Corbett on Trumpet, Jeremy Rodgers on Trombone, and saxophonists JR Varner and Brannon Bollinger. The Spectacles are fronted by our friend from across the pond, Pete Pawsey. Altogether, The Spectacles jump and blow, skank and dance the roof off the stage and the crowd outta their seats. Big sound! Big show! Big Spectacle! Don't miss The Spectacles!
