Latitude 42° @ Brewdog Castlegate v BrewDog Castlegate
The first brewery in Portage opened its doors in 2013 and takes its name from the line of latitude that runs through the small city. Co-founder and head brewer Scott Freitas departed the top job at Maui Brewing to take the helm at Latitude 42° after being recommended to the other co-founder Joe Stoddard by a mutual friend.
Scott’s near thirty-year experience of craft brewing instantly stood Latitude 42° in great stead and also persuaded Joe’s father Mike to invest in the 15BBL brewery and back the project. The groundwork paid off as Latitude 42° have since won over a hundred medals at US and global beer competitions and unlike many breweries their size, they already rock their own canning line. Such has been the take-up for their beers – which as you’d expect given the connections to Maui are highlighted by a lot of hop-forward IPAs and Double IPAs – the brewery announced plans early last year to expand. They are currently constructing a second brewpub and taproom due west of Kalamazoo, a fifteen minute drive from their debut location!
